  • 79 Fenyang Road

At 79 Fenyang Road is the Arts and Crafts Research Institute. Built in 1905, it was originally the private residence of the director of the former French Municipal Council and formerly known as "Small White House in Shanghai". It is a construction of late French Renaissance with classic pillars and rich decorations. On the two sides of the entrance there are large steps leading to the hall on the second floor and some places inside are decorated in the style popular at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It was the No. 1 office in the Asia-Pacific region of the World Health Organization after the Anti-Japanese War and in 1950s Mr. Chen Yi, the first mayor of Shanghai after the founding of People's Republic of China, once lived here.
