Garments are a common need of human beings, an overall reflection of the tradition, cultural level and spiritual outlook of a nation. China, with a long history, traces its fashion origins to thousands of years ago.

To strengthen the exchange and co-operation with the International Garment Industry, promote the fashion culture of the Chinese nation and develop the Shanghai garment industry, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the China Council of Textile Industry have decided to hold the '95 Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival in Shanghai, from March 21 to 28, 1995.

As an open international metropolis, Shanghai is at an intersection of Chinese and Western culture. The city, also the source of Shanghai-style garments, was once called "Paris of the East".

Today, Shanghai's garment industry, as part of the economy, has achieved great progress. The industry has more than 1,500 enterprises, among them some 1,000 foreign-funded ventures, including joint investment ones, co-operative ones and solely-owned ventures. A large-scale garment market linking the domestic and international garment industries has taken shape. The garment industry combines traditional technique and modern technology.

Meanwhile, local citizens are dressing more colorfully and have developed more sophisticated fashion tastes. All these provide necessary conditions for holding an international fashion culture festival in Shanghai and offer a wide stage for international exchange and co-operation.

March comes in a season full of vigour and life, when a great variety of plants are turning green and all flowers are gayly blooming. By that time, the flowers of the festival, consisting of diverse foreign garments, will blossom to greet guests to the gala.

The '95 Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival will see varied and interesting activities, Shanghai warmly welcomes all friends to next year's gala.
