Pudong New District


Lies to the east of Huangpu River and west of the mouth of Yangtze River, Pudong New District is a triangular area with an area of 556 square meters and a permanent residential population of 2,400,000. Separated by a river from the prosperous bund and Nanjing Road, Pudong is far behind the old Shanghai City because no bridges and tunnels lie between. It was on April 18th 1990 that the Chinese government claimed to develop and open up Pudong in order to enhance the economy of the Yangtze River Delta and the whole region the Yangtze River flows. After ten years' development, Pudong has been a base of modern industries and the high-tech industries of Shanghai. It highlights the reforming and opening of china in the 90s. Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone is China's only national-level development zone named after "finance and trade". In addition, 65% of the site area of Shanghai Exposition of 2010 will be set in Pudong.


  • Century Boulevard

    Being the first landscape avenue, Century Boulevard stretches 5 kilometers long and 100 meters wild connecting the Oriental Peal TV Tower in the west to the Century Park in the east. Along the pavement in the north of the avenue set eight china botanical gardens while at the crossing of Laoshan Road and Yanggao Road stand two squares of sculptures as well as art galleries.

  • Lujiazui Central Green

    Lies at 160 Lujiazui Road in Pudong, the Central Green is the biggest open grassland in Shanghai with a covering of 100,000 square meters. The sightseeing awning looks like a white whelk and a nail while the main mast stands 28 meters high beside the lake. At the entrance are a group of huge steel sculptures named Spring, which resemble eight flowers in full bloom. The road in the greenbelt winds like a magnolia flower in the center of which is the lake of 8,600 square meters designed in the shape of the plate of Pudong. The greenbelt has a sward of 650,000 square meters with willows and ginkgoes planted in the center and the north.

  • Riverside Promenade

    The 2,500-meter-long Riverside Promenade consists of a touching-water platform, green sloping land, semi-underground compartments and sightseeing routes. On the sloping land covered with flowers and grass, tourists can have a full view of the scenery of the west bund as well as enjoy the secluded peace fleeing the noisy city life. A 70-year-old shipyard wharf and a large iron anchor can be seen along the avenue. Besides, the century fountain made of 21 groups of spouts decorated with the colorful lights illuminates the area in the evening.

  • Shanghai Science and Technology Museum

    Shanghai Science and Technology Museum stands beside Century Square and Century Park with a site area of 68,000 square meters and a floor area of 96,000 square meters. It is an important site to popularize science as well as a tourism resort in Shanghai centering on "nature, humanity, science and technology"¡£There are five exhibition halls in the museum.

  • Nanpu Bridge

    Nanpu Bridge, 8,346 meters long, is the first stayed-cable bridge spanning Huangpu River designed and constructed by Chinese of double-tower and double-rope structure. The principal bridge is 423 meters in length and ranks No. 3 in the world while the main tower is 150 meters in height and strengthened by the powerful slope draglines. The grand bridge is worthy of the fame as one of the miracles of bridge constructions in the world.

  • Huaxia Culture Park

    Huaxia Culture Park is also called Pudong Eight Scenes Park in which there are constructions built under ancient styles such as Ziyan Pavilion, Guanlan Hall, Cangzhen Chamber and Jinxiu Hall in addition to the memorial of Wu Changshuo.

  • Huaxia Tourism and Culture Area

    Located beside Pudong International Air Harbor in the southeast of Pudong New District, Huaxia Tourism and Culture Area is the only zone named after culture and tourism in Pudong. It consists of two sections with the west built into a residential quarters in which there are Huaxia Culture Park, the Memorial of Wu Changshuo, Pudong Celebrities Street, Xintiandi Club, Huaxia Bowling Alley and Huatian Entertainment Center and the east occupied by Sanjiagang Seaside Resort which has high-grade seaside villas and a golf village club.

  • Shanghai International Convention Center

    Shanghai International Convention Center is located at 2727 Riverside Promenade in Pudong with a total floor area of 110,000 square meters. Inside there is a multifunctional hall of 4,300 square meters and a press center occupies 3,600 square meters as well as over 30 modern conference halls of various sizes. In addition to the luxury guestrooms, there are accommodation and entertainment facilities of high grade. The '99 Fortune Global Forum was held in this center in September 1999.

  • Oriental Pearl TV Tower

    Standing at 1 Century Boulevard, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower is the highest tower in Asia and the third highest in the world with the height of 468 meters. The elegant and grand building is one of the symbolic buildings and famous scenic spots in Shanghai.

  • Former Residence of Huang Yanpei

    Located at 1-8 Lane 74, Lanfentang in Chuansha Town of Pudong, the former residence of Huang Yanpei is a building of brick-and-stone structure with a showroom displaying the life of Huang Yanpei (1878-1965) who was a famous educationist and businessman of China. The south-facing building has two floors with a site area of 306 square meters and a floor area of 480 square meters. It was reconstructed in 1991 and Chen Yun inscribed the horizontal board " Former Residence of Huang Yanpei". It has been open to tourists since 27th May 1992.

  • Jinmao Mansion

    Standing at 2 Century Boulevard, the most prosperous site in Lujiazui finance and trade zone in Pudong New District, Jinmao Mansion was designed by S.O.M Office from USA and built with the investment of China's MOFTEC. The mansion is the highest building in china and the third highest in the world with 420.5 meters in height. It has a site area of 23,000 square meters and a floor area of 29 square meters with 88 storeys on the land and 3 underground and an annex of 6 floors. The 88th floor is an extravagantly decorated sightseeing hall that is 340.1 meters high with an area of 1,520 square meters. It is the biggest sightseeing hall in china and the granites applied in the hall are all imported from other countries and the wall stone has a thickness of only 3 mms. Jinmao Mansion is one of the symbolic buildings as well as a hot scenic spot in shanghai.

  • Qinci Yang Dian (Imperial Admiring Hall)

    Located at the crossing of Zhangyang Road and Yuanshen Road in Qinyang Town of Pudong District, Qinci Yang Dian is one of the oldest Taoist temples in Shanghai. It was formerly known as Jinshiniang Hall and Dongyue Xing Gong ("Xing Gong" means the imperial palace for short stay away from the capital.) and renamed Qinci Yang Dian after reconstruction in 1770 (the 35th year under reign of Qian Long of the Qing Dynasty). It was built by Sun Quan (the emperor of Wu in the Three Kingdoms Period) for his mother according to the legend. It is said that it was set up in the Tang Dynasty for there are words " built under the supervision of Qin Shubao" seen on the girder. Inside there were more than 10 halls such as Qingguang Hall, Sanguan Hall and the Palace of Hell and so on in addition to figures of Buddha and Bodhisattva made of carved clay and modeled wood. Unluckily most of them were damaged in the Great Cultural Revolution. It was reconstructed since 1982. Now there is a pailou (decorated archway) with a double decked rolling eave stands grandly in front of the gate and a gold horizontal board inscribed by Aixinjueluo Yuchan hangs under the eave of the main shrine. It is crowded with pilgrims at the birthday of Dongyue Emperor (the 28th March of the lunar calendar) and other Taoist festivals.

  • Sanjiagang Seaside Resort

    Lies at the entrance of Chuanyang River, Sanjiagang is a seaside resort with a combination of the seaside sights, modern constructions, rural flavors and green world to meet disparate requirements of tourists. Beside the 1,300-meter-long sand beach is a bathing place of 350,000 square meters full of defecated and filtrated water.

  • Shanghai History Museum

    Shanghai History Museum is located in the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and was formerly known as Shanghai Historical Relics Museum. It consists of 6 sections introducing the development history of Shanghai and the changes occurred in economy, society, city development, politics and life after Shanghai was opened as a port with cultural relics, documents and pictures. About 20,000 relic pieces are treasured in the museum such as the bronze lions once stood in front of the HBSC.

  • Century Park

    Located in the Administration and Culture Center of Pudong, Century Park is the biggest ecological city park in the area circled by the inner loop line and is acknowledged as the "Kingdom for Holidays". Centers on grassland, forests and lakes, the park has 45 scenic attractions such as Century Bell, Jingtian Lake, Music Fountain, Music Square and so on. The park provides lots of Entertainment items such as children's palace, sightseeing bus, and fishing section in addition to exhibition halls, coffee bars and restaurants. What's more, more than 20 service projects such as medical treatment and baby carriage service are offered by the Tourists Service Center.

  • Yangpu Bridge

    Stretching 7,658 meters over the lower reaches of Huangpu River; Yangpu River connects Yangpu District and Pudong District. The principal bridge is 1,176 meters long and 30.35 meters wild. It is acknowledged as the No. 1 stayed-cable bridge in the world with 256 slope large ropes and the biggest rope is 330 meters in length. The principal tower is 208 meters high in the shape of "Y" upside down. The bridge floor is pulled up by 256 steel draglines on the sides of the two towers and the longest slope dragline is 325 meters in length. The double columnar lights light the principal bridge and the bridge approach while the obstruction lights on the main tower and the navigable channel lights set on the steel girders contribute to the security of the vehicles and ships as well as the beautifulness of the bridge itself. The nicely designed bridge looks like a rainbow arched across Huangpu River with a grand and elegant manner.

  • Shanghai Securities Mansion

    Standing at 528 South Pudong Road, the Pudong Exist of the tunnel on East Yan'an Road, Shanghai Securities Mansion is 109 meters high with a floor area of 100,000 square meters. It has 30 floors with 3 underground. The 2nd floor to the 9th floor is housed by Shanghai Stock Exchange, which provides 1,810 seats in the pillarless transaction hall of 3,600 square meters. It is one of the marked buildings in Lujiazui finance and trade zone.

  • Chaoyin Nunnery

    Chaoyin Nunnery, also called Kwan-yin Hall, covers 3640 square meters to the east of Lijiapan in Gulu Town. It was set up in 1456 (the 7th year under reign of Jing Tai of the Ming Dynasty), but burned down in the period of Yong Zheng in the Qing Dynasty. It was repaired in 1739 (the 4th year of Qian Long of the Qing Dynasty) and reconstructed in 1803 and 1813 (the 8th year and the 18th year under reign of Jia Qing of the Qing Dynasty). However, it was burned down again in 1930 (the 19th year of the Republic of China). It was rebuilt in 1934 but in 1937 the east wing-room was shot by the Japanese army and was repaired after Master Baoang entered the nunnery. It was used as factories and storehouses after the liberation and many of the constructions were damaged till it was reconstructed and opened to the tourists in 1982. Sermon Hall and Baoen (pay a debt of gratitude) Tower was set up in November 1992. The sermon hall has two floors with the depositary of Buddhist texts in the upper floor and the lower floor served as the sermon place centered by a jade Buddha statue. The Baoen Tower is 51 meters high and has 7 storeys and tourists standing on the top can have a full view of the city as well as the East China Sea.

  • Former Residence of Zhang Wentian

    Located in Zhangjia Zhai, Dengsan Village of Shiwan County in Pudong New District, the former residence of Zhang Wentian (1900-1976, a proletarian revolutionist and a theoretician) is a typical brick-and-stone Pudong residential compound with a site area of 686 square meters and a floor area of 495 square meters. The south-facing residence has 13 rooms with the central five built by Mr.Zhang's forefathers in the period under reign of Guang Xu in the Qing Dynasty and two wing-rooms on each side built later and other four for various uses to the west of the principal room. The residence was in poor condition for years without reparation until it was reconstructed according to the original pattern in February 1989. Inside there is a half-length stature of Zhang Wentian made of glass fiber reinforced plastics and a showroom of the revolutionary relics of Zhang Wentian in which there are 491 items including bookcases, books and the ink stone used by him as well as magazines such as Fictions Monthly. It has been open to tourists since October 1992.

  • Shanghai Oceanarium

    Shanghai Oceanarium is located in Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone of Pudong New District with a construction area of 22,400 square meters. It has eight exhibition sections displaying over 14,000 marine organisms of more than 300 species from different places of the world. As one of the longest ones in the world, the 120-meter-long submarine sightseeing tunnel enables the tourists to have a wonderful look at the mysterious seabed and the its treasures from different angles.
